This week in Dairy Profit Weekly
This week in Dairy Profit Weekly:
1) Dairy price reporting: A bill reauthorizing daily mandatory livestock price reporting for another five years also calls for USDA to establish an electronic price reporting system for dairy products.
2) Heifers converted to cows: USDA’s semi-annual cattle inventory report estimates July 2010 dairy cow numbers are up from January 2010, but dairy replacement heifers are down. Compared to year ago, cow numbers are down, but heifer numbers are up.
3) DPW Trends: July federal order Class II, III & IV prices are higher. The butter-to-margarine consumption ratio is the highest in the 30 years of reporting. The number of beef cattle in the nation’s feedlots is up.
4) DPW Industry: Cooperatives Working Together adds butter, anhydrous milkfat to list of products eligible for export assistance. Dairy Research Institute created.
5) DPW Washington: GIPSA comment period extended; bill would block cap-and-trade end run; another bill would defer estate taxes for some farms.
Later: USDA’s monthly Ag Prices report was released after Dairy Profit Weekly’s Friday press deadline. California’s July Class 4a-4b milk prices were to be announced Aug. 2, the same day as USDA’s June 2010 dairy product production estimates. A report of U.S. ag land values and rental rates was set to be released on Aug. 4.
