This week in Dairy Profit Weekly:

1) November milk production: November 2009 milk production in the 23 major states totaled 14.0 billion lbs., down 1.0% from November 2008, according to USDA’s Milk Production report. The number of milk cows in the 23 major states was 8.31 million head, 209,000 head less than November 2008 and 6,000 head less than October 2009. Production per cow in those states averaged 1,679 lbs. for November 2009, 25 lbs. more than November 2008.

2) Summing up 2009: USDA’s final Agricultural Income and Finance Outlook report of the year indicates all three measures of U.S. farm income are projected to decline in 2009 – net farm income is projected to decline by 34.5%; net cash income by 28.4%; and net value added by 20%. The largest declines in farm-business income are forecast for livestock farms, particularly dairy.

3) DPW numbers: It’s not new news, but USDA secretary Tom Vilsack announced about $60 million in cheese and cheese products will be purchased for use in domestic feeding programs.

4) DPW Industry: In a year where dairy producers faced economic hardships like never before, partnerships and innovation funded by the dairy checkoff helped generate immediate- and long-term sales, according to Tom Gallagher, chief executive officer for Dairy Management Inc.
